AUXILIARY DEPUTY SHERIFF
 
 
 
 
MAJOR FUNCTION:
 
Responsible work of a general public safety nature, with primary emphasis on the protection of life and property and the enforcement of laws. Can  perform all duties of a Deputy Sheriff under the direct supervision of a fully certified Deputy Sheriff.
 
ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES:
 
 
  • Patrols areas (with agency assigned Deputy Sheriff) in a radio equipped vehicle preserving law and order to prevent and/or discover the commission of crime.
  • Answers a wide variety of calls and complaints (with agency assigned Deputy Sheriff) involving robberies, domestic disturbances, assaults, burglaries, suicides, homicides and other misdemeanors and felonies.
  • Directs the flow of traffic
  • Patrols parks, buildings, installations and property on foot or in radio equipped police vehicles (with agency assigned Deputy Sheriff) to prevent damage to such properties by fire, theft and/or vandalism.
  • Makes arrests and transports or escorts prisoners to and from confinement areas (with agency assigned Deputy Sheriff).
  • Testifies in court relative to arrests made.
  • Performs related work as required.
 
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
 
  • Ability to gain knowledge of laws, ordinances, rules and regulations effective in the County
  • Ability to gain considerable knowledge of the geography of the County, its incorporated areas and road network
  • Ability to comprehend and execute oral and written instructions
  • Ability to develop skill and efficiency in the use and care of firearms
  • Ability to enforce the law with firmness, tact and impartiality and to deal courteously with the general public
  • Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies
  • Physical strength and agility and freedom from disabling defects
  • Ability to meet specific physical and mental requirements as may be established .
 
 
 
 
REQUIREMENTS:
 
 
  • Graduation from an accredited high school, or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma
  • Compliance with a" minimum requirements” as set by the State of Florida for auxiliary law enforcement officers
  • Completion of Minimum Standards training course established by the State of Florida
  • No comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications
  • Must be able to type 20 wpm
 
 
  • Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License
  • Successfully withstand a thorough background investigation
  • Pass a physical/drug screening
  • Pass a CVSA (computerized voice stress analysis)
  • Pass a psychological exam with interview
  • Final approval by the Sheriff
 
AGREEMENT:
 
All applicants that are hired as an Auxiliary Deputy must sign a letter agreeing to follow the agency policy for Auxiliary and to include:
 
 
  • Must attend scheduled Auxiliary meetings. Two consecutive absences or pattern of absences will result in grounds for termination.
  • Must attend all scheduled training sessions.
  • Must commit to 12 hours of service monthly. (not including scheduled meetings).
 
 
 
Members of the Auxiliary unit are not paid employees and do not receive benefits (this is to include, but not limited to: health, dental, vision and life insurance, retirement, paid leave, etc…)
